A Letter From the Director

Dear Parents,

Ever since opening its doors in 1967, The Young School and Elementary has valued individuality with an emphasis on teamwork and caring. In keeping with this philosophy, the school has developed a twofold policy: to foster in each child a sense of worth, and to create an environment in which each child is appreciated.

For many years, an individual child was forced to fit into a school program, rather than the program fitting the child. Often difference was equated with error and error became failure.

A school needs to be a place for all children, not based on the idea that they’re all the same, but that they’re all different. A good school program recognizes and addresses each child’s special pattern of growth: physical, emotional, social and intellectual. It creates an environment where children’s natural desires to learn about themselves and their world is encouraged by intelligent, sensitive and caring teachers. Its staff must be devoted to protecting and inspiring the confident, carefree and joyous spirit that is a significant characteristic of youth.

We at The Young School and Elementary offer that good school program. A dedicated staff understands the importance of imagination and intellect and works to promote the creative and problem solving abilities of all children. We take great pride in the spirit of the students, the strength and richness of our academic program and the quality of the facilities, which have been recently recognized by the Middle States Association of Schools and Colleges, an organization established in 1887 to set standards for American education.

To provide each child with a lifelong love of learning is our motto and our measure of success.
