Elementary

First, Second and Third Grades

Classes in the elementary school are structured in such a way that children work at the level appropriate to their stage of intellectual development and are challenged to their fullest potential in a nurturing environment.

A variety of learning styles are used in all subject areas, but an emphasis is placed on cooperative learning. We believe peer tutoring is important in learning key concepts as well as important in achieving increased confidence as a result of academic success.

The program allows for flexible multi-aged groups to stay together as they move to different learning areas containing a rich variety of accessible materials. These materials are both innovative and challenging to the individual learner. The sequential curriculum is carefully organized around the way children learn. The flexible grouping policy enables  teachers to accommodate diverse interests, learning rates and learning styles.

Reading/Language Arts: The focus is not only to provide a child with a basic skill for learning, but to instill a love of reading and writing that will carry over as a source of pleasure in leisure time. The method of instruction incorporates both whole language and phonics. Poetry, well chosen literature, creative writing, public speaking and journal writing are included in the program.

Mathematics: The program emphasizes critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as computation, mental math, estimation, measurement and the organization and interpretation of data. A myriad of materials, games, hands-on manipulation, computer programs and literature are utilized. The relevance of mathematics in our everyday world is reinforced throughout the curriculum.

Science: The science curriculum is aligned with the National Science Educational Standards and explores Life, Earth and Physical Science. It is designed to encourage students to use the scientific method by discovering information through researching current topics, particularly, environmental issues.

Social Studies: The focus of our program is to celebrate diversity and to continue to broaden the child’s sensitivity to the world. Map skills are an important facet of the Social Studies curriculum. They include map keys, routes, compasses, grid maps and political and physical maps. The children study American history, New Jersey history, commerce and local governments. There is a focus on the importance of civic responsibility through year long social commitments.

Foreign Language: Beginning conversation introduces students to the Spanish language and affords an opportunity to appreciate its people and culture. It helps build vocabulary skills and provides for weekly activities which include games, songs and literature.

Music: A choral music program which allows for both individual and group performance is provided. Both two and three part harmonies are taught and an introduction to famous composers and their music is included. In addition, Suzuki violin lessons are offered.

Computer: All children participate in computer lab and are taught keyboarding and word processing skills. They are given ample opportunity to use the computer as a tool, both on an individual and on a class basis. The computers are used for reinforcing classroom based skills. Children are involved in age appropriate projects including computer produced slide shows and Power Point presentations.

Art: The curriculum allows the children to explore the art of different cultures with opportunities to appreciate and understand great art works from the past as well as the present. Individual creativity is also encouraged.

Physical Education: The goal is to help the children to develop coordination, physical fitness and a body and mind connection within the structure of cooperative games and competitive sports.
